KC Sand Sculpting Festival
May 17 and 18, 2008

Sand Sculpting on Saturday, May 17 beginning 11 a.m.
Festival held rain or shine

 Don’t just be a spectator, bring out your  creativity by participating in the Festival!

 Space is limited in each division. Teams will be assigned a plot of sand on a first come basis.
Judging begins at 4 p.m.
Awards will be presented in each division  at 5 p.m. A People’s Choice Award will be awarded Sunday in each division with donated proceeds to benefit  sunflower House. Sand sculptures may be viewed and voted on until 3 p.m. Sunday.
 

 

KC SANDSCULPTING TOOLS

Here is a list of basic items that we suggest:

  • Shovels – long handled for adults, short handled or plastic for kids
  • Water buckets – 2 or 3 per team, of an appropriate size for the sculptor
  • Carving tools – see below
  • A rake is a nice option for finishing the plot, can be full-sized or a hand rake
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) and plenty of drinking water

Here is a list of possible carving tools that are allowed:

  • Youth division up to age 9
  • Plastic spoon
  • Plastic knife and/or wooden craft stick
  • Wooden skewer
  • Straw
  • Plastic cup
  • Inexpensive 1 inch wide paint brush

Youth division ages 10 to 15 as well as sand sculpting beginner adults:

  • Metal or heavy duty plastic spoon
  • Straw
  • Sand pail or small (1 gallon) bucket
  • Spray bottle
  • Metal spatulas of various sizes (we use cookie & frosting spatulas)
  • Wooden skewer or mechanical pencil
  • Inexpensive paint brush(es) from 1 inch to 4 inches wide

More advanced carvers may want to add:

  • Cutting tools of various sizes, such as a 1.5 inch or 2 inch mason trowel, a dinner knife, a triangular palette knife that comes to a point
  • Smoothing tools, such as a rectangular mason trowel or pool (rounded) trowel
  • Melon ball cutter

If you are interested, we do have tool kits available. The kids’ kit is just as described above, for $5. Our beginners’ kit is pretty much what you see in the second group, with one modified pastry spatula (an essential tool), a mechanical pencil and one paint brush, for $10. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like a kit(s).
 
 

KC SANDSCULPTING FESTIVAL OFFICIAL RULES

DIVISIONS:

A. Youth (ages 9 and under)
B. Youth (ages 10 to 15)
C. Friends & Family
D. Business
E. Artist/Architect

SPECIFICATIONS:

1. Date and time:

a. All sand sculpting will be Saturday, May 17, 2008
b. Friends & Family, Business and Artist/Architect divisions will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.
c. Youth divisions will begin at 1 and will end at 4 p.m.
d. Festival is held rain or shine.

2. Plot:

a. Plot size for Friends & Family, Business and Artist/Architect divisions will have a work space area of 15 feet x 15 feet with pushed up sand material.
b. Plot size for Youth divisions will have a work space area of 10 feet x 10 feet with pushed up sand material.

3. Registration:

a. Entrants may download the Registration form on line at www.SMBV.com or where Registration is available in print.
b. Registration must be mailed with payment by check to the following: Volleyball Inc., 4925 Widmer Rd., Shawnee, KS 66216

d. Teams will be assigned a plot of sand on a first come basis. On the day of the event if space is available, same day registrations may be taken.

4. Fees for each division:

a. Youth divisions are $5 per child.
b. Family & Friends are $35 per team.
c. Business and Artist/Architect divisions are $50 per team.

5. Prizes and Awards:

a. Each registered participant will receive a KC Sandsculpting Festival T-shirt.
b. Awards will be presented in each division for first, second and third place.
c. The People’s Choice Award will be awarded on Sunday.
d. This is an amateur competition, there are no monetary prizes.

RULES:

  • Only the registered sculptors are allowed inside their own plot.
  • All teams provide their own tools as listed on the sculpting tools page.
  • All work must be done within the designated plot, using only the sand available in the plot.
  • Nothing may be added to the sand except water. No paint, flour, sugar, cement, clay, adhesives, etc.
  • No power tools (e.g., power screwdrivers) will be allowed inside the plot.
  • Sand is to be shaped and sculpted by hand. No molds or templates allowed.
  • One decorative object may be used in the sculpture, but it may not be used to support the sculpt
